Yash Akkara, BS

Visiting Medical Student

I am a medical student at Imperial College London, expected to graduate in 2028. I completed a BS in Neuroscience at Imperial College London and the University of Oxford in 2026, where my research focused on how stroke and brain tumours disrupt functional brain networks using EEG.

My academic interests center on decoding neural signals as biomarkers of pathological states, with an emphasis on translating these into clinically meaningful tools to improve patient outcomes. I have pursued this work through collaborations with the Imperial College Department of Brain Sciences, the Queen Square Institute of Neurology, the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences, and the UCSF Department of Neurological Surgery.

At the Wang Lab, I am currently developing and optimizing gait-based biomarkers to distinguish walking from non-walking states in Parkinson’s disease, with the goal of integrating these signals into commercially available adaptive deep brain stimulation (aDBS) systems for real-world use.

Outside of research, I really enjoy sim racing, scuba diving and watching Formula 1!
